Monterosso al Mare
Monterosso is the last village of the 5 Terre that you encounter from Portovenere towards the west.
It is the most populous and largest village. It is located in the center of a small bay, closed to the west by the promontory of Punta Mesco.
Here are the only beaches of the 5 Terre, the most famous of which is Feggina beach. The town is divided into two parts: the old part and the new one joined by a tunnel.
In addition to bathing and various maritime activities, Monterosso offers attractions of historical interest:
such as the church of San Giovanni Battista built between the 13th and 14th centuries in Gothic style with its beautiful black and white marble facade; the church is equipped with a bell tower (now rebuilt), which originally had a defensive function; next to it the Oratorio dei Neri, also like the church, has a two-tone façade but in Baroque style.
Still on the hill that separates the old part from the new one is the Convent of the Capuchin Friars, dating back to the 17th century, used in the Napoleonic era as a military base, before returning to its religious function.
In the Middle Ages Monterosso was equipped with a defensive system against pirate attacks, consisting of 13 Towers. Today only three remain, the most famous of which is the Torre Aurora, which is located on a spur of the coast.
The Statue of the Giant is very suggestive: 14 meters of reinforced concrete depicting the god Neptune supporting an enormous shell. The real peculiarity is the position: embedded in the rock of the promontory that closes the Feggina beach to the west. It was built in 1910 by the sculptor Arrigo Minerbi and the architect Levacher Minerbi. Over time, unfortunately, it has suffered serious wear and tear; in fact, he lost his arms, his trident and his shell. But this does not make its view any less fascinating and evocative.
The poet Eugenio Montale was a great admirer of Monterosso. Here he spent his childhood and returned often in adulthood.
But it will also be very pleasant to wander around the alleys and its shops, tasting wines and local products in the small restaurants or focaccerie.
